Donna Summer, 1948-2012, songs and tribute
In 1979, nobody was bigger than Donna Summer. In one year, she had four number one songs and five of the top tunes of the year. The whole year was one big Donna Summer soundtrack dance party. She was tagged as the 'Queen of Disco.' But Donna Summer was so much more.
One highlight in the Donna Summer hit list came in 1983 when, long after disco faded, she hit with She Works Hard For The Money. In those days, celebrating women's equality in music had mostly faded. She Works Hard For The Money became Donna Summer's biggest hit in years, and the main 80's anthem for women. That same year, Madonna showed up to eventually steal the title Queen of Dance.
Donna Summer was by no-means finished. She continued to create popular songs throughout. In 1999, Donna Summer released the song I Will Go With You. This song became her first top 30 song of the 90s, and marked the beginning of a time when Donna Summer regained her popularity in dance circles and clubs. Although pop stations no longer picked up her music, she continued to have one huge dance song after another all the way through to late 2010, when people jammed to To Paris With Love. Most people did not know she was ill with cancer. In her last days, she continued to produce new music, so there is a good chance now that Donna Summer will have a few more dance classics yet. Donna Summer, 1948-2012.
