Deep Purple was an album rock, metal, and progressive group. Deep Purple made the top 20 twice. In 1968, Hush charted at number 2. Years later, in 1973, and with a different band line-up, Smoke On The Water made it to number 5. Deep Purple was known for it's live shows, and a live version of Smoke On The Water was also popular the same year.

In 1988, a side project by members Ian Gillan & Roger Glover produced the number 14 rock hit Telephone Box.
